I had a
sound engineer determine the axial modes of the the HKU gallery
space, 99Kuub Garlerie, based on precise measurement I had taken of its
dimensions. I then moulded a plaster rod with dimensions calculated so it would resonate best at frequencies which harmonised with these modes. Sensitised by a piezoelectric
transducer embedded within it, the plaster-rod was suspended from the roof of the
space.
When interacted with by viewers, the embedded 'contact-microphone' transmitted the sound of the resonating the object through a set of speakers which faced it. The sounds created were reinforced both by the acoustic affinity of the gallery and the object and feedback relationship between the speakers and sensitised plaster, ringing like a bell in the space.
