Memorials
to Active Listening
was a project carried out in three phases dealing with the poetics of
recording, presentation, re-presentation and site.
For the second iteration of Memorials to Active Listening, the four cubes, by this time mute
following the inevitable failing of the batteries powering the mp3
players concealed within them, were re-displayed at The Dunedin
School of Art alongside four clear 12'' lathe-cut records containing the sounds once present at the recording-sites. As 'objets d' art', the cubes took on a consciously
sardonic stance. In their objective weight and mass, inert
beyond their physical presence in relation to art-history, each stood
in stark contrast to the four corresponding translucent discs quietly
mounted on the far wall.
