Sculpture on the Shore, Takapuna

Bunker Resonance at Ft. Takapuna explores the poetics of resonance, drawing links between the acoustic phenomenon which allows sound an extended but still fleeting presence in the world, and memory, the psychological phenomenon which grants the past moments a second wind.

The sounds of the artillery formally installed at Fort Takapuna, at other times known as 'Fort Cautley', 'HMNZS Tamaki', and 'Narrow Neck', were played back and recorded from within the bunker. This process was repeated until the original sounds and the resonant tones of the bunker sat at equal volume. For Sculpture on the Shore, smaller speakers were installed, through which the ambient tones and muffled reports resonate quietly, asking viewers to consider the history of the place where the work is installed.
